CFD Technology benefits all
CFD technology is a huge benefit for naval architects when optimising any vessel: a ship, a luxury yacht or a marine vessel. Using old technology, such as towing tank tests, has the downside of bringing in scaling models with empirical formulations and experience. CFD does not have this problem, since it models the full ship size, allows for full size stern wake and captures boundary layer effects.
A good optimisation process involves investigating the hull with its appendages and propeller simultaneously, as there is no isolated engineering component without an effect on the whole system. CFD allows to perform calculations on the system as a whole, so the design process can be steered for fuel efficiency while avoiding damaging vibrations.
The CFD technology can also be used for aerodynamic simulations to capture wind effects around exhaust vents in order to investigate where the smoke will travel for passenger comfort.
