Ship Optimisation Benefitted By CFD Technology
CFD technology gives naval architects a huge benefit to ship optimisation, luxury yachts and marine vessels. Old technology such as towing tank tests has the downside of bringing in scaling models with empirical formulations and experience. CFD does not have this problem as the full ship size is modelled and allows for full size stern wake and captures boundary layer effects.
A good optimisation process involves investigating the hull with its appendages and propeller simultaneously, as there is no isolated engineering component without an effect on the whole system. CFD allows to perform calculations on the system as a whole, and steer the design process for fuel efficiency and avoid damaging vibrations.
The CFD technology also allows for aerodynamic simulations to capture wind effects around exhaust vents to investigate where the smoke will travel for passenger comfort.
